Defense Secretary Claims ‘Absolute Authority’ to Kill Suspected Drug Traffickers at Sea

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stirred controversy Thursday by asserting that the United States holds “absolute and complete authority” to eliminate suspected drug traffickers, including in international waters. The statement came in the wake of a Pentagon airstrike on a vessel allegedly carrying members of the Venezuelan crime syndicate Tren de Aragua.

When questioned by reporters about the legal grounds for the strike, Hegseth emphasized it was justified as a measure to protect the American public. “We have the absolute authority to conduct these operations in defense of the American people,” he said. He cited the threat posed by the open flow of narcotics, claiming that under previous administrations, drug-related deaths claimed the lives of tens of thousands of Americans annually.

Hegseth described the operation bluntly, stating, “I’d say we neutralized a drug boat, and there are 11 narcoterrorists at the bottom of the ocean. Anyone attempting the same will face similar consequences.” He confirmed that the Pentagon had precise intelligence on the vessel and its occupants but declined to disclose the methods used to identify them.

President Donald Trump later publicized the strike via social media, asserting that the military action successfully eliminated “positively identified Tren de Aragua narcoterrorists” without any U.S. casualties. A video purportedly showing the strike accompanied his post, though Venezuelan officials dismissed it as a computer-generated animation.

The move has drawn sharp reactions internationally. Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro condemned the operation as “extravagant, unjustifiable, immoral and absolutely criminal,” while experts note that drug trafficking offenses do not carry the death penalty in the U.S., highlighting the contentious nature of the strike.

The incident has reignited global debates over extrajudicial military actions against suspected criminals and the limits of U.S. authority in international waters.
